Before choosing your wedding bands: an honest conversation with a jeweller

A paradox worth considering

A typical wedding in Serbia includes dozens of individual items: venue, equipment, food, drink, photographer, video, decoration, flowers, dress tailoring, hairdresser, makeup artist, music. Sums of money distributed across hundreds of small decisions.

All of that lasts single day.

Wedding bands, which are worn every day, for a lifetime, on the hands of two people who have decided to walk through life together, are often chosen impulsively, with the idea that one should "save where possible".

The difference between a solid wedding band and one that is half the price in practice often amounts to less than the cost of floral table decorations. The difference between an average wedding band and a masterfully crafted one is generally less than what is spent on an hour or two of photographic work on the day itself.

It is all understandable. We understand budget pressures. But it is worth pausing and asking oneself: are the priorities placed where they belong?

Why people compete over lower wedding band prices

It is a legitimate question, and the answer is multi-layered.

Wedding bands are often perceived as a "mandatory purchase", something the ceremony requires, something that "must be there". When something feels mandatory, the human brain naturally seeks the cheapest option that satisfies the requirement. We optimise for price, not for value.

On forums, one can often see someone boasting about buying wedding bands for very little money, followed by someone adding they bought something similar even cheaper, and a third person cheaper still. Almost like a competition.

There is another reason: the market is saturated, and many small jewellers struggle to survive by lowering prices. In that race, the easiest thing to cut is the quality of what cannot be seen at first glance.

And herein lies the problem that concerns industry experts most: the difference between a solid and a simpler wedding band is only visible after three, five, or ten years of wear. And by then, it is already too late.

What lies behind the lowest prices

A 14k gold wedding band costs a certain minimum amount because the price of gold on the global market is neither a theory nor a change of mood. The price of wedding bands consists of the cost of materials, crafting costs, and margin. If the price is too low, a compromise has been made somewhere.

Typical areas where "savings" are made:

Ring thickness. A wedding band can have the same outer width as a higher-quality one, but be considerably thinner than standard. After a few years of wear, a thin ring wears down, deforms, or even breaks.

Alloy quality. 585 fineness (14k) implies 58.5% gold, but the remaining 41.5% can be of varying quality. Simpler alloys lose their shine faster, crack at the joints, and sometimes cause allergic reactions. We have written separately about the differences between yellow, white, and rose gold alloys in our article on metal colour for wedding bands.

Precision of crafting. Machine production without final hand-finishing might not be noticed at first glance, but it will be felt later on.

Soldering. Whether wedding bands are soldered or crafted from a single piece, the quality of the joint matters.

After-sales service. Resizing, repair, polishing, re-plating with rhodium (for white gold): all of this costs money and must be accounted for somewhere. If it is excluded from the price, it is charged later at a higher rate or avoided altogether.

This means a simple thing: it is worth asking why it is so cheap, and seeking a concrete, technical answer.

What sets 'all right' apart from 'as it should be'

An 'all right' wedding band is one that looks good on day one.

A wedding band made 'as it should be' is one that still looks good fifty years later. One that is solid enough to survive everyday life. One that has a jeweller standing behind it with the expertise to repair it. And one crafted with an understanding that it will be part of every photograph, every handshake, every gesture of that couple.

This sounds sentimental, but it is merely a description of physical reality. A wedding band is the only piece of jewellery worn non-stop. It is removed rarely, if ever. It is not kept in a box like a solitaire ring. It is not changed according to the occasion. It becomes part of your hand.

How to recognise a jeweller worth trusting

The marketing phrase "choose us because we are good" says very little to those making a purchase for a lifetime.

Instead, here are objective signals by which you can recognise a jeweller worth trusting, whether it is ours or another:

1. Transparency about materials. A good jeweller will tell you precisely: the karat weight, the alloy, where it is made, whether the stones are certified, and by which laboratory. If these questions cause discomfort to the seller, that is a red flag.

2. Written guarantee with clear terms. Beyond verbal promises ("of course it can be resized"), ask for written terms: whether resizing is possible and how many times, what it covers, what it does not cover, and how long it lasts.

3. An accessible workshop or a clear origin. Wedding bands are made somewhere. A good jeweller can tell you where and, most often, how.

4. Dedicated time for you. A wedding band is chosen thoughtfully. A good jeweller expects you to visit two or three times before a final decision, giving you as much time as you need.

5. A willingness to advise against a choice. The surest sign of an honest jeweller is when they recommend you do not buy something you asked for. When they tell you: "this profile will not suit your lifestyle", "this is overinvesting for what you actually need", "we do not do that, but we can direct you elsewhere". Honest jewellers filter and suggest what you truly need, not everything they have on offer.

6. An open conversation about price. A itemised breakdown of the price: how much for the materials, how much for craftsmanship, the margin, and what is included. No ambiguities. No illogical "promotional discounts".

7. Longevity over time. A jeweller that has existed for decades has survived because people return. It is simple math: deceiving customers is a strategy that cannot be sustained across generations.

What about the price: how much should you really invest

We will not give a specific figure here, as every couple's situation is different. But we will offer one principle:

The price of wedding bands deserves to be one of the first items in the wedding budget, not the last.

Many couples who return to us later say their priorities would have been different had they known. They would have reduced some expenses spent on a single day and increased the budget for their wedding bands.

This is not advice in the sense of "spend more". It is advice regarding proportion. The question is not how much you spend, but where wedding bands stand in relation to everything else.

What we promise, and what we do not

To be entirely honest:

What we do not promise: that we are the cheapest. We are not. Nor will we attempt to be. If you are looking primarily at price, there are many jewellery stores that will offer you a lower figure.

What we do promise: that we will listen to you before offering anything. That we will tell you when you do not need what you requested. That we will give you an answer to every technical question. That we will provide a written guarantee with clear terms. That we will be here in ten, twenty, fifty years, for any resizing, polishing, repair, or advice.

This is what the Andrejević family has been offering for eight decades, and it is the reason why many of our clients today belong to the second or third generation of their families coming to us.

An invitation that is not a sales pitch

We have our team, our workshop and eighty years of experience.

If you would like to talk about wedding bands, visit us. We will look together at what suits you, what does not, what the realistic options are for your budget, and what is worth investing in. If after that conversation you decide to buy elsewhere, that is completely fine. Our wish is to help you make a good decision, not to persuade you to buy specifically from us.
